CHELAN—One of the original wineries in Chelan, Vin du Lac has deep roots in the Chelan wine industry.  With the launch of their new wine brand “ABODE”, owner Larry Lehmbecker shows his commitment extends to the entire Chelan community through the donation of at least 10% of ABODE’s sale proceeds to the Chelan Valley Housing Trust to build more affordable homes.

“Affordable housing is a crisis in Lake Chelan,” Lehmbecker explains. “Our wine industry has helped make the Chelan Valley more economically viable year-round and a more desirable place to live. But as a result, essential workers in the service, hospitality, health care and education industries can’t afford to live here. This problem can only be solved by community members recognizing the problem, taking responsibility, and contributing to address it.”

“It takes a community and a vineyard,” says CVHT Executive Director Mike Cooney, acknowledging Vin du Lac’s commitment to help the affordable housing crisis. With a smile he continues, “And a resort, and a golf course, and a restaurant, and a real estate company, and a builder, and a retail store.”  In a challenge to local leaders Cooney adds, “I invite any business who wants to follow Larry’s lead to help solve this problem to call me at 509.393.9652.”

Available in a white and a red blend, ABODE is priced at $20 a bottle and is available online and at the winery.  Lehmbecker is optimistic that wine retailers and restaurants in town will also carry the wines and the new label will find a substantial following. “Buying and sharing a bottle of the wine is an easy way for members of the community to support the Housing Trust and publicize its mission,” he says.

Cooney couldn’t agree more. “I recently dropped off two bottles to one of our donors who had an impromptu wine party on her porch on a very warm day.  The wine was chilled, with water beads running down the cold bottle. Her friends enjoyed the wine, the conversation and simply being together, all while supporting affordable housing. It was a total win-win,” states Cooney.
